The 1st arrondissement is one of the oldest arrondissements in Paris and the smallest by land area. It shelters much of Louvre and the Tuileries Gardens. Mainly used for business and administration, it is the least populated of the arrondissements. Formerly the heart of the Roman city of Lutetia, conquered in 52 BC, it is located mostly on the Right Bank. Though some parts on the right bank (Les Halles included) date back to the early Middle Ages, it also covers the west end of the lle de la Cite.
