Designed by Jean Chagrin in 1806, Arc de Triomphe is a monument in Paris, France, to honour those who fought for France during the Napoleonic war. It is recognized as a symbol of Parisian pomp and elegance around the world. Today also it includes the tomb of the Unknown Soldier and is one of the most famous monuments in Paris. Situated at the western end of the Champs Elysees, the monument is 51 meters (165 ft) high and 45 meters wide and stands in the centre of the Place Charles de Gaulle, also known as Place de I’Etoile (Star Square). The Arc goes from the courtyard of the Louvre Palace to the outskirts of Paris and is the anchor of the historic axis L’Axe historique- a sequence of monuments and grand thoroughfares on a route. Inspired by the Roman Arc of Titus, it is the second largest triumphal arch in existence. After the end of World War I, Charles Godefroy flew his Nieuport biplane through it, and was caught in a newsreel. Such is the gigantism of the Arc de Triomphe. Visitors are suggested to come after 6.30 p.m., when the flame of the Unknown Soldier is lit and the Champs-Elysees is bathed in blazing lights.
