Bastille was a prison in Paris, which is best known today for storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789. Built as the Bastion de Saint-Antoine during the Hundred Years’ War under Charles V of France, this gate was extended to create a fortress to defend the east end of Paris and the Hotel Saint-Pol royal palace. Surrounded by a broad moat, the prison was built as an irregular rectangle with 8 towers, 68 metres (223 feet) long, 27 metres (88 feet) wide, with towers and walls 24 metres (78 feet) high. Until the 17th century the Bastille was used for two purposes, chiefly as a castle and also for the safekeeping of royal treasure. People who committed a mistake or some offense against the King or the state, religious prisoners, overtly sexual writers and political prisoners were housed here.
