The meeting point of twelve straight avenues including the Champs-Elysees which continues to the east, the Place de I’Etoile is a large road junction in Paris, France. It is also known as “Star Square”. In 1970 in honor of President de Gaulle, it was renamed Place Charles de Gaulle however, it is still largely referred to by its original name. The place lies in the middle of the Axe historique and at its centre stands the Arc de Triomphe. As part of Baron Haussmann’s urban planning projects, Place de I’Etoile and avenues leading to it were extensively redesigned. The twelve avenues, clockwise from the north are: Avenue de Wagram, Avenue Hoche, Avenue de Friedland, Avenue des Champs-Elysees, Avenue Marceau, Avenue d’lena, Avenue Kleber, Avenue Victor Hugo, Avenue Foch, Avenue de la Grande-Armee, Avenue Carnot, and Avenue Mac-Mohan. The place has six axes and is symmetrical. The six axes are: Axis avenue Mac-Mohan and avenue d’lena, Axis avenue de Wagram and avenue Kleber, Aix avenue Hoche and and avenue Victor-Hugo, Axis avenue de Friedland and avenue Foch, Axis avenue des Champs-Elysees and avenue de la Grande-Armee, and the Axis avenue Marceau and avenue Carnot. Between the VIIIe, XVIe and the XVIIe arrondisements of Paris, thePlace de I’Etoile (as well as the Arc de Triomphe) is split. Two streets surround the place forming a circle: the rue de Presbourg and the rue de Tilsitt.
