One of the six large terminus stations of the SNCF’s Gare Du Nord is the main line network in Paris. Several transportation lines (Paris Metro and RER) are connected to it. It is the busiest station in Europe, and the third busiest railway station in the world as it boasts of around 180 million travelers per year. Various international destinations such as England, Belgium, and The Netherlands are served by this railway station. Gare Du Nord railway station serves trains to the north of France. Built by Bridge and Roadway engineers on the behalf of the Chemin de Fer du Nord company, managed by Leonce Reynaud, professor of architecture at the Ecole Polytechnique, the first Gare Du Nord was inaugurated on 14 June 1846. It was partially demolished in 1860 and French architect Jacques Ignace Hittorff was chosen for this work by James Mayer de Rothschild, the President of Chemin de Fer du Nord. The new station was opened for service in 1864 while still under construction. Designed around a triumphal arch many slabs of stone were used for the façade. It is very ornate, with 23 statues representing cities served by the country. The most majestic statues, which crown the building, illustrate international destinations (Paris, London, Berlin, Warsaw, Amsterdam, Vienna, Brussels). In 1884 five supplementary tracks were added to Gare Du Nord. In 1889 the interior was rebuilt and an extension was built on the eastern side to serve suburban train lines. Gare Du Nord featured in French films, for instance in Les Poupees Russes, in US movies, The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Ultimatum, Ocean’s Twelve. It finds a mention in “Polaris” by Jimmy Eat World off their album Futures. The station is also mentioned in The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown.
