Designed by architect Pierre Bullet auteur de la Porte Saint Martin, Grands Boulevards refers to eight large streets—Madeleine, Capucines, Italians, Montmartre, Poissoniere, Bonne Nouvelle, Saint-Denis, and Saint Martin that stretches across Paris from the Madeleine to the Place de Bastille. Built in 1705 on the site of the chamber of Louis XIII, it replaced the boulevards of Louis XIV built from 1668 to 1705. Grands Boulevards had became fashionable by 1750 where the nobility and the rich built their homes and Parisians would sit and watch the horse carriages and riders pass by. The Boulevard du Temple which is on the east end, became a center of theaters and dance halls, circuses, waxworks, puppets, dancers, acrobats, mechanical figures, cafes, restaurants, booths and barrows, which lasted for 100 years. Grands Boulevards is a fashionable area, round the Opera-Garnier which is on the western end, with expensive restaurants and boutiques. Visitors can get a better impression of ordinary everyday life in a big city in and around the Faubourgs Montmartre, Saint-Denis and Saint-Martin in the eastern part of the city.
