Paris Locations - Pigalle

Named after the famous sculptor Jean-Baptiste Pigalle (1714-1785), Pigalle is an area around Place Pigalle on the border between the 9th and the 18th arrondisements. With many sex-shops on Place Pigalle and the main boulevards and prostitutes operating in the side streets, Pigalle is famous for being a touristic red-light district. World War II Allied soldiers nicknamed the neighborhood “Pig Alley” because of its raunchy reputation. World-famous cabaret, the Moulin Rouge, and the Divan du Monde are both located in Pigalle. The area to the South of Pigalle is devoted to the retail of musical instruments and equipments, especially for popular music. Famous artists such as Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh and Maurice Neumont had also lived here once. Guitars, drums and musical accessories are sold at a section of rue de Douai. At the nearby Espace Dali Museum works of artist Salvador Dali can be seen. The Musee de l’erotisme (Museum of Eroticism) can also be found here. Tourists can experience “Paris by night” at Pigalle which is a well known spot. It is notorious for the risqué crowd and home to some of Paris’ most famous cabarets ( “Moulin Rouge” for instance, was immortalized by artist Toulouse-Lautrec aw well as Hollywood), or other topless and nude shows. A film entitled Pigalle was made in 1994 in this district starring Vera Briole and Francis Renauld. An album entitled La Rue Pigalle was made by Edith Piaf. Since 2007 “Pigalle” is the name of a dining and music venue on Piccadilly, London, owned by Vince Power.
