Army’s Health Service Museum

Built by Queen Ann of Austria in the middle of 17th Century, the Val-de-Grace Church and Abbey constitute an awesome building. It has been home to a military hospital since the French Revolution. The Abbey was built to pay tribute to her first-born child, future King Louis XIV, whom she was thankful to b pregnant with after 23 years and dates back from 1621. Under the direction of French architect Francois Mansart, the church and the monastery were erected during the second part of the 17th Century. A visit to the church is worth while for its interior which is decorated with numerous sculptures and paintings from Philippe de Champaigne.

It’s unconventional ‘inside out’ architectural style shocked most of the Parisians initially: air conditioning, escalators and lifts are all on the outside, giving the interior unparalleled freedom. The centre is home to the Musee National d’Art Moderne and the Bibliotheque Publique d’Information (BPI) as well as temporary exhibitions, cinemas, and other attractions and was extensively refurbished in the late 1990s.

All-inclusive museum admission: EUR10 Adults; EUR8 Reduced.
