Traveling by Paris RER may be complicated when compared to the metro service. The RER in total consists of 5 express commuter trains which are identifiable by letters and end-of-line names. It covers 8 zones within Paris and the greater Paris region. Unlike metros, RER line splits into several directions at certain points and this might lead you to wrong destination. You can be fined if you cover more than the distance your RER ticket or pass allows. . The RER service varies, but you can avail its services from 5:15 am to midnight or 12:30 am.
Breakdown of RER Lines- Line A: Paris hubs are Chatelet-les-Halles and Gare de Lyon. Runs west to La Défense and St. Germain en Laye; east to Marne la Vallée (Disneyland Paris)
- Line B: Hubs at Gare du Nord, Chatelet, and St. Michel. Runs north to Charles de Gaulle airport and south to Orly Airport (via the Orlyval train).
- Line C: Hubs at St. Michel and the Eiffel Tower. Goes to Versailles southwest and also services northwest Paris suburbs.
- Line D: Hubs at Chatelet, Gare du Nord and Gare de Lyon. Services north and south suburbs.
- Line E: Hub at Gare du Nord. Services east suburbs.
You can purchase the RER tickets from any station in Paris. You can also purchase them from news-stands or tabacs also known as tobacco sellers.
